Bay Park Ocean Outfall and Denitrification RALLY
on Monday, May 12...JOIN US!
We need your help! Governor Cuomo has announced three Long Island water task force meetings, with the first being held in Nassau County. This is an unprecedented opportunity to let Governor Cuomo and federal agencies know we need an ocean outfall pipe and denitrification for the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). Much progress has been made over the last year to repair this STP, although the final step of upgrading the plant and adding an ocean outfall pipe still needs funding!
The Bay Park STP treats 40 percent of Nassau County's wastewater and discharges directly into Reynolds Channel between Island Park and Long Beach. New science shows our bays are experiencing degraded water quality, high ammonia levels, increased seaweed, and high nitrate contamination. This has been going on for years, but during Hurricane Sandy the Bay Park STP experienced its worst days yet. The plant flooded, caught on fire, and then proceeded to discharge raw and partially-treated sewage into bays, throughout streets, and into homes.
The good news is that $820 million has already been allocated by FEMA and New York State to repair the plant and protect it from future storms. However, additional funding is needed for an ocean outfall pipe and to upgrade the plant to remove harmful nitrogen. This is the final step. Help us get the final step accomplished!
Show your support for an upgraded Bay Park STP and ocean outfall. We just need you to attend this hearing. Your presence matters. The more people who show up, the better chance we have for success!
We will rally on
