SPLASH NOTICE - 01/08/2013
Posted: Tue Jan 08, 2013 2:17 pm
PLEASE ATTEND THE
WESTERN BAYS EDUCATIONAL FORUM
January 23, 2013, 10am
Nassau County Legislative Chamber
1550 Franklin Ave, Mineola, NY
Learn about new critical research, the development of a TMDL for our Western Bays, and the state of the
Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant
You are invited to attend the next educational forum on the Western Bays. The Western Bays, a sub-region of the South Shore Estuary Reserve in Nassau County, is plagued with declining water quality. New research shows the most severe concentrations of nitrogen, ammonia, and low dissolved oxygen occur around the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant outfall pipe in Reynolds Channel.
During Superstorm Sandy, the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant failed due to a nine-and-a-half foot tidal surge. The plant discharged a billion gallons of raw and partially treated sewage into the bay.
This forum will review several research projects that are underway, address new funding that has been secured for development of a TMDL, and provide an update on the state of the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant.
Presentations will be made by United States Geological Survey; Dr. Larry Swanson, SUNY Stony Brook Marine Science Research; and Lorraine Holdridge, NYS DEC.
The event is free and open to the public. RSVP today!
